FAQ

Have questions about spray foam insulation? We can help!

Spray foam is installed using very sophisticated equipment by highly trained installers. The insulation is sprayed onto the surface where it adheres and cures.

Spray foam takes less than one minute to cure. You can watch the foam expand to over 100 times its original volume within seconds. Within a few minutes, the spray foam can be covered with wall board or any finish.

The R-value is determined by a controlled laboratory test of an insulation’s resistance to conductive heat flow. Spray foam insulation’s R-value is 3.7/inch Icynene Classic Max , 4.0/inch Icynene  Classic Plus, and 7.1/inch Icynene ProSeal and ProSeal LE. However, due to the air-sealing nature of this product when compared to the non-air sealing qualities of traditionally installed materials such as fiberglass batts, its actual performance (in an uncontrolled, non-laboratory environment) is much higher.

No, it is hydrophobic. However, water can work its way through the foam under pressure or by the force of gravity. When the foam is placed in water it will float. When it is removed, it will dry rapidly and it will not lose any of its insulating properties.

If it is immersed under water, water can be forced into the foam by the hydrostatic pressure. However, once it is removed from the water and allowed to dry out, the original insulating properties will return.

Ice dams are a significant concern in Western Massachusetts. The damage that can occur to a home is devastating. Adding spray foam insulation to your ceilings will fill in any leaks that you may have and will add warmth that will stop the freezing and thawing process that causes ice dams.

Icynene’s open-cell spray foam insulation products are vapor permeable to allow water vapor molecules to flow thru the foam. Since spray foam is a breathing foam,  any moisture in a building concrete or lumber will escape through the insulation as the building dries out.   eliminating moisture that cause rot, mildew, or mold.

Icynene’s closed cell spray foam insulation products reject bulk water and block the mass transfer of moisture that may cause mold.

Spray foam will create buildings with the highest drying potential and least likely to have mold resulting in the healthiest environment for your family.

No!  The Icynene spray foam actually comes with a building lifetime warranty and will not settle, sag, or fall off over time.  If the foam gets wet it will simple dry off by evaporation and have the same exact performance as the day it was installed.  Our foam is not a food source for mold or rodents either.

Icynene spray foams are considered to be environmentally preferred products due to their air sealing qualities which contribute to improved indoor air quality, and reductions in energy consumption as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

Spray foam will not sustain flame upon removal of the flame source. However, like fiberglass, it will be consumed by flame, and gypsum board or other acceptable thermal barriers are required by applicable building codes.

Complete details of the Flame Index and Smoke Index of all Icynene spray foam insulation products can be found in each products Technical Data Sheet.

Most Icynene spray products are water blown, and do not emit hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFCs). Extensive testing in North America has shown that no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are detected after 30 days following installation. Therefore, there are no harmful emissions and Icynene spray foams are both safe for both you and the environment.

Icynene spray foam insulation products do not offer any food value, therefore they do not support bacterial or fungal growth. Furthermore, they also do not retain water, which makes it an unappealing environment for bacterial or fungal spores.
